There’s a common misconception I run into all the time: people assume that if you study Information Technology, you must spend your days buried in code. But the truth is, IT is more than coding. While programming can play a role, the field is broader, more dynamic, and—most importantly—centered on solving real-world problems.
When I tell people I’m majoring in Information Technology, I often get the same reaction: “Wow, you must spend all day buried in code.” But coding is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. IT is also about networks, databases, hardware, security, and—the most overlooked of all—helping people.
What IT Professionals Actually Do
IT professionals wear many hats, and coding is only one of them. Some of the most important contributions include:
Hardware Support: Building PCs, repairing systems, and troubleshooting issues so machines run smoothly.
Systems Management: Working with databases, Linux environments, and cloud platforms to keep systems reliable.
Cybersecurity: Protecting data and infrastructure against evolving threats.
User Support: Guiding people through new tools, training them, and ensuring they feel confident with technology.
The Bigger Picture
This broader understanding isn’t just personal—it reflects what’s happening in the industry. According to CompTIA’s IT Industry Outlook of 2025, the demand for IT professionals continues to grow. Employers aren’t just looking for coders; they need help desk specialists, systems administrators, cloud engineers, and cybersecurity experts.
In other words, the IT landscape values problem solvers, communicators, and versatile thinkers.
Why This Matters
For me, this is exactly what makes IT exciting. I enjoy the hands-on work of fixing hardware and optimizing systems, but I also thrive on helping people feel comfortable with technology. IT isn’t just about machines; it’s about ensuring that technology works for people.
That’s why I chose this field—not to sit behind a screen writing code all day, but to make a tangible difference in how people interact with technology.
